Compulsion (DVD)
Sometimes murder is just a way to pass the time.
In 1924, the world was shocked by the infamous Leopold/Loeb case: 2 teenagers conspired to commit the perfect crime to show their intellectual superiority. It was truly a cause celebre. In 1959, Richard Fleischer created a sensational drama, loosely based on the original case. The boys came from rich families, their perspective was truly warped and over the course of much-celebrated court cases, car and mouse games lead to the outcome.
Orson Welles plays Jonathan Wilk, the lawyer who will take the boys through their last appeal process and he brings all his mellifluous powers of vocal persuasion to the cause. Bradford Dillman and Dean Stockwell play the young boys with appropriated nervous tension. Its a quite unique court case drama that doesnt so much seek blame as an equal justice for all.
